It’s January
January is a great time to reflect on yourself, your goals, and your intentions for life. While you’re at it, don’t forget to look at your podcast and the goals you have for the show! Are you still enjoying producing your podcast? Are you staying on schedule? Do you need to update your goals? Today, we want to think about being intentional with choosing guests.
Some podcasts start with a mission or a guiding framework, like stories about disability empowerment or interviews about accessible technology. It’s not uncommon for people to reach out to podcast hosts and ask if they could be guests on the show. And when you really need some content, you might say yes even if the person who contacted you doesn’t seem like they would be a great fit with your mission or topic. If you’re trying to stick to a schedule, it might feel better to say yes to anyone than to skip an episode or publish it late. But maybe that’s not always the best route.
When it comes to saying yes or no to a potential guest, Sofia Webster has great ideas. Sofia’s a lead consultant on content development and strategy at LaVant Consulting, Inc, and she suggests you ask yourself this question: “How would my listeners feel if I invited this guest onto my show?”
Your audience is dedicated to you and your podcast. They come to expect certain topics, styles, or points of view. And we here at POD Access feel like Sofia’s on the right track with her question. If you think the audience will wonder where this new guest came from or worry that your podcast is drifting in its mission, it could be better to take some extra time to find a better fit. We have lots more about this coming up later this year on the POD Access Podcast! Subscribe now wherever you get your podcasts and on YouTube.
